MyCoast App Helps Greek Authorities Clamp Down on Public Beach Violations

More than 1,900 reports of unauthorized sunbeds, umbrellas, and public beach encroachments have been filed through the myCoast app.

Authorities will be removing illegal constructions on Agia Marina beach on Rhodes as more public beach violations come to light thanks to the myCoast app released earlier this year.

Following an inspection, the Rhodes Coast Guard and local Shipping Ministry squad ordered the removal of 19 metal structures placed in the sea by a local beach bar. Coastline violations were also found. A similar infringement was reported last year on the same Rhodes beach.

More than 1,900 reports have been filed through myCoast app in nearly two months since its launch. Most complaints concern unauthorized placement of sunbeds or umbrellas as well as illegal encroachment of public beaches mainly on the Cyclades and Dodecanese islands, and in Halikidiki.

Commenting on the news, Finance and Economy Minister Kostis Hatzidakis said the laws would be fully enforced “with speed and determination”.

Violators will face fines of up to 60,000 euros.

“We have the citizens as our allies as well as modern technologies, including the use of drones and the new myCoast application, which allow us to intervene immediately where necessary,” he said.

The myCoast app was launched in response to mounting frustration over the illegal use of public beaches by commercial interests.

Users can report incidents and violations in real time after accessing the concession status of the specific beach. In cases users observe restricted access or unauthorized installations like extra recliners or umbrellas on the shoreline or in the water, they are encouraged to report the incident.
