Greece’s labour unions are calling for mass participation in the strike and rallies for May Day on Thursday, May 1. Specifically, the General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE) have scheduled a rally together with the Athens Labor Center at 11:00 on Thursday at Klafthmonos Square.

As the GSEE pointed out in a statement, “ for the unions and the world of labour that they represent, May Day is a day of strike, a symbol of recognition of rights and the struggle for improved working conditions. The vision of the Chicago workers for a better and more dignified life remains relevant in an era of shrinking labor rights and the overconcentration of wealth and power in a few elites.” In this context, the Confederation demands Collective Labour Agreements, active policies to deal with the high cost of living and the housing crisis, and determination of the minimum wage through free collective bargaining and not through government decisions. It also demands stronger state supervision in the workplace to uphold legality, as well as quality public goods, education and health for all. On its part, the Executive Committee of ADEDY calls on public sector workers to actively participate in the strike and rallies that will take place on Thursday, May 1, 2025, throughout the country. The ADEDY strike rally in Athens has been scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at Korai Square.

The main demands of ADEDY are as follows: – Reinstatement of the 13th and 14th salaries. – Real wage increases. – Abolition of the 2% unemployment contribution. – Unfreezing of the wage scale for the two-year period 2016-2017. – Tax-free at 12,000 euros. – Increase and extension of the allowance for dangerous and unhealthy work. – Recruitment of permanent staff, to fill the thousands of organic vacancies that exist in the Public Sector, especially in the sectors of Health, Education, Social Security and elsewhere. – Support for the National Health System with generous funding. – Abolition of the Hatzidakis Law (Law 4808/2021). At the same time, ADEDY expresses its opposition to the privatization of public organizations and bodies. “ May Day is not a holiday, it is a strike,” emphasized PAME, while calling for participation in the strike rally at 10:30 a.m. at Syntagma and in the other rallies in all cities.
