The incident, which occurred in the eastern wing of the palace, has raised serious concerns about the maintenance of one of Greece’s most significant archaeological sites, currently under consideration for UNESCO World Heritage status.

The fresco, a plaster replica from Arthur Evans’ restoration roughly 100 years ago, is a globally recognized symbol of Minoan art. Initial reports indicate that two of its three sections detached and shattered, sustaining severe damage. The collapse occurred shortly after 12 p.m., with approximately 300 visitors on-site. Authorities had already begun evacuating the area due to strong winds, though experts insist the incident resulted from chronic maintenance failures, not weather conditions.

“It was only a matter of time,” said local archaeologists and tour guides, who have long warned about the deteriorating state of Knossos. “The monument needs urgent interventions, not more studies or promises.” Despite repeated pledges for conservation, the palace remains in disrepair, with some areas described as abandoned.

The Ministry of Culture, informed of the incident, has called for immediate restoration to safeguard the monument and prevent further damage. The affected section of the palace is now closed for safety and damage assessment.

The collapse comes at a critical time, as Knossos seeks inclusion on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Critics argue that the incident underscores systemic failures in preserving Greece’s cultural treasures. The original fresco is safely housed in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.

Winds Prompt Temporary Closure Earlier on Friday, gale-force winds led to a precautionary evacuation and temporary closure of the site from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Ministry of Culture emphasized that protecting visitors and the monument is a top priority, with regular hours extending until 8:00 p.m.

Public Outcry and Calls for Action Images of the fallen fresco have gone viral, fueling sorrow and frustration online. For locals and site workers, the loss is deeply personal, representing a blow to Crete’s cultural legacy. Authorities face mounting pressure to implement a comprehensive restoration plan to prevent further losses to this irreplaceable Minoan heritage.
