Titled “Strengthening Maritime Security through International Cooperation for Global Stability,” the debate will bring together global leaders and experts for a strategic exchange of views on tackling the rising threats facing the world’s seas.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres will deliver the opening briefing. Joining the discussion as key speakers are Melina Travlos, President of the Hellenic Shipowners’ Association, and Professor Christian Bueger of the University of Copenhagen, an expert in international maritime security and a researcher at the UN Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR).

The debate will address a wide range of maritime security challenges, including piracy, terrorism, human and arms trafficking, illegal fishing, and attacks on critical maritime infrastructure. Participants will also examine the environmental consequences of illicit activities at sea and the growing impact of climate change on maritime stability.

A central theme will be the need to enhance international cooperation, particularly through intelligence sharing, technological innovation, joint surveillance, and improved maritime governance. The meeting will emphasise the importance of risk management strategies and the protection of vital infrastructure to bolster resilience and ensure rapid response capabilities.

Discussions will also highlight the implementation of existing UN Security Council resolutions and international legal frameworks—particularly the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)—as essential tools in combating maritime threats.

As president of the UNSC for May, Greece aims to reinforce the Council’s role in safeguarding maritime security, promoting it as a foundation for global peace, economic development, and international cooperation according to in.gr

Following the session, Prime Minister Mitsotakis is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Secretary-General Guterres.

This event marks a significant moment for Greece on the international stage, reaffirming its commitment to maritime diplomacy and global security.
