Crete Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Warning, Tourists Urged to Evacuate Coast

No major damage has been reported, but Crete, one of Europe’s most earthquake-prone regions, remains on high alert for potential aftershocks. In September 2021, a 6.3 magnitude quake near Heraklion devastated villages, damaged hundreds of homes, and displaced families, while another tremor in October 2021 claimed one life and injured over a dozen people.

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck Crete, Greece, early this morning, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning and urge tourists and residents to “move away from the coast and seek higher ground” for safety. The quake felt as far as Israel and Egypt, follows a 5.9-magnitude tremor last week, marking the second tsunami alert for the island in just over a week.
