Greece will continue to uphold its principled position on the Palestinian issue and remain a leading voice in humanitarian matters, Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis said in Parliament on Friday, addressing concerns raised by the opposition about the government’s handling of the war in Gaza.
In response to a pointed question from Zoi Konstantopoulou, leader of the opposition party Plefsi Eleftherias, Gerapetritis emphasised that Greece is actively engaged in diplomatic efforts to bring peace to the region.
“We are at a critical juncture,” he said. “In recent days, I have spoken with foreign ministers from across the region, including all Arab states, and we have a clear understanding of the direction events are heading.”
Gerapetritis confirmed that a peace initiative for Gaza is currently in motion, expressing hope that it could bear fruit in the coming days. However, he noted that much depends on Hamas’ response. He also reiterated Greece’s support for an Arab-led reconstruction plan for Gaza.
“Our priority is to end the humanitarian catastrophe,” he stated. “We must all work together to put an end to this nightmare, which is sadly intensifying due to the wider instability in the region—particularly the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel. Our goal remains a return to peace and prosperity in this extremely vulnerable part of the world.”
Konstantopoulou sharply criticised the government’s stance, accusing it of ignoring international law and continuing diplomatic relations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu despite an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC), which accuses him of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
She accused the government of turning “a blind eye to Israel’s international crimes” and questioned the moral standing of continued engagement with Israeli leadership under such circumstances.
The exchange reflects the intensifying domestic debate in Greece over the country’s position on the war in Gaza, amid mounting international scrutiny of the humanitarian crisis and calls for accountability.
