G. Gerapetritis: Greece Will Not Become a Hub for Irregular Migration

Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis delivered a firm message: “We will not allow Greece to become a hub for irregular migration,” emphasizing that, if necessary, stricter measures will be implemented.

“The precedent of March 2020 is clear,” the Foreign Minister stated in an interview with SKAI, acknowledging, however, that “the challenge is significantly greater because it involves the high seas. Nevertheless, there are options under international law that will be enforced.”

“If the trend of large boats carrying migrants persists, rest assured, we will significantly tighten the framework,” he added.

“Currently, Sudan, a neighboring country, has 20 million displaced people due to its civil war, with an additional 2 million in Libya and Egypt. This is a potential crisis for Europe. The situation in Africa is chaotic, with events that are clearly orchestrated but not always controllable,” he explained.

Gerapetritis noted that Greece faces migration flows from eastern Libya, while Italy faces similar issues from western Libya. He stressed, “If we hadn’t deployed frigates, critics would have questioned why the Navy wasn’t activated.”

“Greece is committed to controlling migratory flows. There will be increased vigilance, which aligns with European directives,” Gerapetritis stated, highlighting that “Greece is the only European country with excellent relations with Egypt and the Arab world.”

He also emphasized the importance of balanced diplomacy with both Libyan governments, noting ongoing efforts to unify the Libyan state. “In practice, we anticipate improvements in addressing migration and geopolitical challenges,” he concluded.
