Greece Braces for Intense and Prolonged HeatwaveGreece is preparing for an extended and intense heatwave set to affect the country from Monday, July 21, through Saturday, July 26. While temperatures may not reach historic highs, meteorologists warn that the real danger lies in the heatwave’s duration and widespread impact.
According to meteorologist Giannis Kallianos, temperatures will remain well above seasonal averages for six consecutive days, affecting nearly every region in the country. Central and southern mainland Greece — particularly Thessaly, Central Greece, the Peloponnese, and Central Macedonia — are expected to be hit the hardest, with maximum temperatures reaching 44–45°C.
Cities such as Larissa, Trikala, and Karditsa may experience highs of up to 45°C, while Lamia, Sparta, Thebes, Elefsina, and Livadeia could see temperatures between 43–44°C. Athens is forecast to reach 42–43°C at the peak of the heatwave, with nighttime temperatures remaining uncomfortably high — between 34–35°C — due to persistent thermal stress.
Even regions that typically enjoy a milder climate, such as Ioannina, Chania, Kozani, and Chios, are expected to reach or exceed 40°C, reinforcing the nationwide scope of this weather event.
Tuesday and Wednesday are projected to be the most extreme days, with possible records in the Thessalian plain, Boeotia, Phthiotis, and Argolis. Larger islands like Crete and Rhodes will also face high temperatures approaching 40°C in their interior regions.
Meteorologist Anastasia Tyraski notes that the heat will begin building over the weekend, peaking early in the week. While Sunday will see temperatures around 38°C, they will rise to 40°C on Monday before reaching critical levels midweek.
Authorities urge citizens to stay hydrated, avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun, and remain alert as the country endures what could be one of the longest and most intense heatwaves of the summer.
