Greece is bracing for a dangerously volatile weekend as the Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection has issued a Category 5 “State of Alarm” warning for extreme wildfire risk on Saturday, July 26—the highest risk level on the national scale.
According to the official forecast, the following regions are under extreme threat (Category 5):
- Attica Region (including the island of Kythira)
- Central Greece (Regional Units of Boeotia and Euboea)
- Peloponnese Region

Meanwhile, very high wildfire risk (Category 4) is expected in:
- Western Greece
- Phthiotis and Phocis
- Zakynthos Island
- Magnesia
- Most of the Northern Aegean Islands
- Crete
- Thrace, including Rodopi and Evros
The Civil Protection Authority has activated its emergency protocol, placing firefighting units, aerial support teams, and security forces on full alert. Local municipalities and regional governments have also been instructed to enhance operational readiness.
Citizens are urged to avoid any outdoor activity that could ignite a fire, such as:
- Burning dry grass or branches
- Operating spark-emitting machinery (e.g., grinders, welders)
- Using outdoor grills or smoking bees
- Disposing of lit cigarettes
The public is reminded that open field burning is strictly prohibited during the fire season.
In the event of a fire, individuals are advised to immediately contact emergency services by dialing 199.
