A search and rescue operation took place in the early hours of Saturday, when 27 foreign nationals were spotted aboard a small boat approximately 50 nautical miles southwest of Ierapetra, off the southern coast of Crete.

The vessel was detected by a passing container ship sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands. A drone from the European border agency Frontex was also involved in the operation. The rescued individuals were safely transferred to the port of Kali Limenes.

Initial reports indicate that all 27 people are in good health. Authorities say they will be transferred within the next few hours to a temporary accommodation facility in Heraklion, where they will undergo identification and registration procedures.
