As Greece continues to welcome millions of tourists to its islands and mainland destinations, a new survey by Revolut reveals that Greek travelers themselves are facing their own anxieties when heading abroad — particularly when it comes to managing their finances and personal safety.
According to the survey, conducted in June 2025 by Dynata on behalf of the digital banking platform Revolut, the top two financial concerns for Greek holidaymakers are the fear of unexpected expenses draining their finances (17%) and the difficulty of staying within budget while resisting the temptation to overspend (17%). These figures place Greek travelers among the most financially cautious in Europe.
The online survey, which included a representative sample of the Greek population as part of a broader study across 20 European countries, sheds light on the psychological and practical pressures that many face when preparing for and experiencing their holidays.
While digital banking and travel-friendly financial tools have made managing money abroad easier than ever, Greeks still worry most about going over budget or being caught off guard by unforeseen costs. According to Dave Eborne, Head of Fraud at Revolut, these concerns are valid and reflect a deeper stress many feel around financial preparedness during leisure time.
“For many Greek consumers, managing a budget on holiday and the fear of unexpected expenses are real sources of stress,” said Eborne. “It’s important for travelers to feel in control of their money, so they can actually enjoy their time away.”
In addition to financial stress, physical safety — particularly the risk of theft — also remains high on the minds of Greek travelers, with 16% listing it as their number one security concern. This places them in line with the European average, though the survey also uncovered a generational divide in attitudes toward travel risks.
For example, 21% of Greeks aged 55 to 64 said they worry most about physical theft while traveling, whereas just 12% of Gen Z respondents (ages 18–24) shared the same concern. Meanwhile, younger travelers are more likely to be concerned about digital threats: 18% of those aged 18–24 identified fraud or unauthorized charges as a major worry, compared to just 5% of older travelers.
Interestingly, Greeks — along with Romanians — appear to be the least concerned in Europe about digital fraud overall, with only 9% of respondents citing it as a top concern, well below the European average of 13%.
Eborne commented on this generational shift in perception:
“It’s somewhat surprising that younger generations are less worried about physical theft, given how much sensitive information is now stored on smartphones. We always encourage all travelers — especially digital natives — to remain vigilant both physically and digitally.”
The survey findings suggest that while Greeks are eager to enjoy their time off, they are doing so with an eye on their wallets — and, increasingly, with smartphones in hand and personal safety in mind.
With Revolut offering real-time budgeting tools, spending notifications, and advanced fraud protection, the company hopes to ease some of these concerns and help travelers — Greek or otherwise — enjoy their holidays with greater peace of mind.
