Today, the reality of the Greek National Health System (NHS) surpasses the voices of negativity and exaggeration. According to initial results from a survey of 5,000 patients across 93 hospitals, the vast majority of citizens report being satisfied with the care they received.
The survey presented by Kathimerini shows that:
- 75% of patients are satisfied with the care they received.
- 93% found all the medical specialties they needed.
- Doctors and nurses are recognized for their courtesy, respect, and professionalism.
- Hospital cleanliness reaches 90%, and operating theaters function in an organized manner with modern equipment.
“The NHS is not in ruins, as some would like to portray it. It is a living system that is improving and enduring,”emphasizes Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis, highlighting that patients’ voices are now being heard loudly.
In just 18 months, the government has implemented reforms that seemed impossible for decades:
- Parallel private practice for NHS doctors, extension of work beyond age 67, financial and institutional incentives to choose regional hospitals.
- Evening surgeries, full renovation of hospitals and health centers, new state-of-the-art medical equipment.
- Preventive Screening Program “Spyros Doxiadis,” covering the entire Greek population for the first time.
- Digital tools putting Greece at the forefront of the EU: electronic health records, patient tracking system, central procurement system.
At the same time, annual NHS funding has doubled, and Greece receives the lion’s share of national recruitment programs. All this counters claims that the government is “selling off” public healthcare.
The patients’ voices are the strongest proof: they thank and support the NHS. The challenge now is to continue improving it, not to devalue it for political reasons.
