Greece Issues Wildfire Risk Alert for Aegean Islands and Crete

Authorities urge extreme caution as hot, dry conditions push fire danger to “very high”

Greek civil protection authorities have issued a wildfire risk alert for Tuesday, warning of “very high” fire danger (risk level 4) in several regions, particularly across the Aegean islands and Crete, as hot temperaturesstrong winds, and dry conditions persist.

According to the Fire Risk Prediction Map issued by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection, the following areas have been placed under the “very high” alert level:

  • Karpathos (South Aegean)
  • The islands of ChiosSamos, and Ikaria (North Aegean)
  • The regional units of Iraklio and Lasithi (Crete)

In response, state agencies, regional authorities, and municipalities in these areas have been placed on heightened readiness to respond immediately in case of a fire outbreak.

“The risk of wildfires is extremely high, and everyone must remain vigilant,” Civil Protection officials stated.

Residents and visitors are strongly urged to avoid outdoor activities that could accidentally spark fires. These include:

  • Burning dry vegetation or debris
  • Using machinery or tools that produce sparks
  • Lighting barbecues in natural areas
  • Discarding lit cigarettes or matches in the open

The use of fire in agricultural fields is strictly prohibited during the summer fire season.

Authorities have stressed the importance of early reportingAnyone who sees smoke or fire is urged to immediately call the Fire Service at 199.
