“Marietta Giannakou” initiative brings upgrades to 431 public schools across Greece

On Monday, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the 3rd High School of Zografou, where he underscored the government’s ongoing efforts to modernise public education infrastructure through the “Marietta Giannakou” programme.

This national initiative, launched to upgrade and revitalise aging school facilities across Greece, has already been implemented in 431 public schools, with more projects in the pipeline. mitsotakis zaxaraki

“The ‘Marietta Giannakou’ programme has proven to be a tremendous success,” Mitsotakis stated. “By early September, 431 schools across the country will have undergone renovations. Our aim is not only to maintain this momentum but to increase funding so that even more schools can benefit. Every renovated school provides students with a safer, more modern environment, while upgraded courtyards transform school grounds into vibrant community spaces where children can play, exercise, and participate in creative activities after school.”

The Prime Minister also highlighted the installation of interactive whiteboards in nearly all public school classrooms, describing it as a clear reflection of the government’s commitment to educational modernisation and digital learning.

Education, Religious Affairs and Sports Minister Sofia Zacharaki echoed this message, emphasising that schools are fully prepared to welcome students and teachers for the upcoming academic year. “This year, many schools have been upgraded to offer a more supportive learning environment for our children,” she said. “This initiative will continue every year, with more teacher appointments, improved infrastructure, and a commitment to keeping schools open and accessible for all students.”

The programme is named after the late politician and former Minister of Education, Marietta Giannakou, in honour of her lasting contribution to the development of Greek education.
