Tensions rise as Cyprus Finance Minister calls the energy project “non-viable” – Greece demands clarity – European Public Prosecutor launches criminal investigation

A rift has emerged between Athens and Nicosia over the Crete–Cyprus electricity interconnection, following controversial remarks by the Cypriot Finance Minister, who described the project as “not financially viable.” His comments have sparked a strong reaction from the Greek government, which is now demanding a clear and official position from the Cypriot side.

There appear to be two opposing camps within the Cypriot government: one that supports the completion of the project, and another that remains skeptical, citing economic and technical concerns.

Greece’s Message: “Clarify Your Position”

The Greek side has been firm. The interconnector is viewed as a strategic infrastructure project, not only for Greece and Cyprus but for the broader Eastern Mediterranean region. Government officials in Athens are calling on Nicosia to speak with one voice, stressing that political ambiguity threatens the future of a project of national and European importance.

Meanwhile, the Cypriot government has shifted focus to Greece’s Independent Power Transmission Operator (ADMIE), arguing that the project’s full viability depends on the fulfillment of specific obligations by the Greek operator. President Nikos Christodoulides has reiterated that Cyprus supports the project, but emphasized the need for greater guarantees and transparency before proceeding. kalodio

European Prosecutor Launches Criminal Investigation

In a dramatic development, the European Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened a formal investigation into the project. The probe reportedly concerns potential criminal offenses and mismanagement during earlier planning and funding phases. The launch of the investigation adds legal complexity to an already sensitive diplomatic and political issue.

A Dual Crisis – Energy and Political

The internal discord within the Cypriot government, combined with public comments that appear to undermine the project, has alarmed Athens. The Greek government, which has politically and financially supported the interconnector, is increasingly concerned about its viability.

Adding to the urgency is the fact that the project has been designated as one of strategic European interest, with geopolitical and energy-security implications for both Cyprus and the EU. Any derailment could impact broader regional cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The Crete–Cyprus interconnector is rapidly becoming a litmus test for Greek–Cypriot cooperation. As strategic priorities clash with domestic hesitations and legal investigations, the need for coordinated, unified political will has never been greater. What was once heralded as a flagship energy project now hangs in the balance—caught between national interests, bureaucratic hurdles, and rising diplomatic tensions.
