One of Greece’s largest infrastructure projects is moving full steam ahead. Two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) are shaping the underground network of Athens, while major expansions of Lines 4 and 2 are redefining the future of urban mobility.

Current Status of Line 4 – Section A (Alsos Veikou – Goudi)

  • Estimated Completion: End of 2029
  •  Line Length: 12.8 km
  •  Stations: 15
  •  Construction Phase: Actively ongoing

TBM “Niki” – Route: Alsos Veikou → Evangelismos

  • Has already constructed 1,900 meters of tunnel
  • Passed through Galatsi, currently near Elikonas
  • Will proceed through Kypseli, Dikastiria, Alexandras, Exarchia, Akadimia, Kolonaki
  • Expected completion: End of 2026 at Evangelismos shaft

TBM “Athina” – Route: Katechaki → Evangelismos

  • Has constructed 3,700 meters of tunnel
  • Passed through Panepistimioupoli, heading toward Kaisariani
  • Final destination: Evangelismos
  • Expected completion: End of 2025 or early 2026

TBMs are tunneling through future station areas without station excavation being completed yet — excavation follows later.

 Archaeological and Technical Challenges

  • Panepistimioupoli StationOngoing archaeological survey (an ancient road was discovered)
  • Goudi Station: Excavation complete, but an EYDAP water pipeline presents technical complications
  • Evangelismos Station: Ongoing legal appeals regarding Rizari Park; additional objections from the City of Athens

Line 2 Extension – Towards Ilion (2027–2032)

  • Extension Length: 4 km
  •  New Stations: Palatiani, Ilion, Agios Nikolaos
  •  Construction Start: 2027
  •  Completion Target: 5-year delivery
  •  Projected Ridership: 67,000 daily passengers

A multimodal hub with a 3-level parking garage (150 spaces) is planned at Palatiani.

Additional Works Tied to Line 2 Expansion

  • Depot Expansion at Eleonas (20,000 m²)
  • Upgrading Electrical & Mechanical (E/M) Systems for Lines 2 and 3
  • Digital Data Transmission Infrastructure overhaul, with zero downtime expected for the metro lines

Future Expansions of Line 4 – The Full Five-Segment Vision

 Section A – In Progress:

Alsos Veikou – Goudi (15 stations / 12.8 km)

Section B – Prioritized Next Phase:

Goudi – Lykovrysi (8 stations / 9.6 km)

  • Includes: Goudi, Katechaki, Faros, Filothei, Sidera, Olympic Stadium, Paradeisos, OTE, Marousi, Pefki, Lykovrysi
  • Passes along Kifisias Avenue — major business corridor facing heavy traffic

 Section C – Under study:

Evangelismos – Ano Ilioupoli (3 stations / 4.1 km)

Section D – In early design:

Alsos Veikou – Petroupoli (6 stations / 7.5 km)

  • Via Nea Ionia, Nea Filadelfia, and the AEK Stadium

 Section E – Long-term strategic goal:

Marousi – National Road (Ethniki Odos) (3 stations / 4.4 km)

Full Vision of Line 4 Upon Completion

  • Total Length: 38.2 km
  • Total Stations: 35
  • Network Shape: “U” configuration
  • Coverage: City center, north & west suburbs, university campus, Olympic Stadium, National Road access

Planned Metro Network Expansions in Attica (Under Study):

  • Line 2 southward → Glyfada
  • Line 4 westward → Petroupoli via Nea Ionia and Nea Filadelfia
  • Line 4 southeastward → Ano Ilioupoli
  • Line 1 northward → Nea Erythraia & National Road (Varibobi interchange)
  • New Line connection to SNFCC (Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center) via Kallithea

Athens Digs Deep to Move Fast – A New Era in Urban Mobility

Athens Metro Line 4 is a transformative infrastructure project poised to redefine how the capital moves. Combined with strategic expansions of Lines 2 and 1, the metro network is entering a new era of green, high-capacity, and digitally advanced transportation. With stations reaching deep into underserved urban areas, and connectivity across major economic and educational zones, the underground network is becoming the lifeline of a sustainable Athens.
