Adonis and Stavros Niarchos: Together for a Modern NHS
More Beds, Better Hospitals – The Truth About Donations

In today’s parliamentary session (September 22, 2025), the Greek Parliament reviewed and processed the Ministry of Health’s bill: “Ratification of the March 19, 2025 Partial Donation Agreement – Project XIII between the Greek State, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, and the public legal entity University General Hospital ‘Attikon,’ G.N. Western Attica Agia Varvara.” This marks a decisive step in upgrading Greece’s National Health System (NHS), combining public funds with private donations under the leadership of Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis.

The NHS Is Changing – See What Adonis Is Doing for Our Hospitals

Minister Adonis Georgiadis emphasized in Parliament that criticism of private donations is baseless, especially when critics themselves have previously accepted similar contributions. This policy is not only legitimate—it’s necessary. No country, even the wealthiest in the world like the USA or Scandinavian nations, can fully fund its health system solely with government resources.

Georgiadis’ strategy effectively combines two funding sources:

  • Public Funds: Most investments in the NHS, including hospital renovations and upgrades, are funded through the Ministry of Health and the European Recovery Fund.
  • Private Donations: Targeted contributions, like those from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, enable rapid implementation of projects that would otherwise take years.

Donations and the State Hand in Hand: How Lives Are Saved at Attikon

Under the partial donation agreement ratified today, the historic Nursing Building at Evangelismos Hospital will be fully reconstructed. The total cost of approximately €15 million is covered by €9 million from the state and the remaining portion from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.

At the same time, a combination of private sponsorship and public investment adds 163 beds to Attikon Hospital, drastically reducing overcrowding and improving patient care immediately.

From Overcrowding to a Modern NHS – Adonis’ Strategy

The government is also investing in brand-new health centers in Sapes, Niasos, and other areas, at a cost of roughly €1.5 million each, solving decades of infrastructure problems. The goal is a health system that is modern, functional, and accessible to all citizens.

Georgiadis stresses that funding alone isn’t enough: collaboration with private donors and national benefactors is crucial for accelerating projects and improving conditions for patients.

All Greek Benefactors for Our Health – What Adonis Is Doing

The contributions of national benefactors like Stavros Niarchos, Athanasios Martinos, Marianna Latsis, Nikolaos Pateras, and others are essential. Their donations exceed €1 billion in total and have already transformed infrastructure, added beds, new treatment units, and saved lives daily.

Today’s ratification of the donation for Attikon and Western Attica clearly demonstrates that state-private collaboration can truly transform the NHS.

The NHS Is Reborn

Adonis Georgiadis’ policy shows that proper management and coordination of all available resources can create a modern, effective, and functional National Health System. Greece proves that public-private partnership is not just necessary—it works: a reborn NHS providing better care for every citizen.

With new projects, beds, renovated buildings, and state-of-the-art facilities, the Adonis – Stavros Niarchos strategy sends a clear message: our health is a priority, and results are visible today.
