Mitsotakis – Christodoulides at the UN: United Front for Greece–Cyprus Electricity Interconnection
Bilateral meeting in New York highlights shared commitment to the strategic Great Sea Interconnector and upcoming intergovernmental summit in Athens

On the sidelines of the 78th United Nations General Assembly in New York, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides, reaffirming the two countries’ joint commitment to implementing the Greece–Cyprus electricity interconnection, known as the Great Sea Interconnector.

The meeting underlined the excellent bilateral relations between Greece and Cyprus, while also addressing preparations for the upcoming Greece–Cyprus Intergovernmental Summit, which will take place this November in Athens.

President Christodoulides briefed Prime Minister Mitsotakis on the priorities of Cyprus’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union (2026). Both leaders emphasized that their governments remain fully committed to the strategic importance and timely implementation of the interconnection project, which enjoys the strong support of both the European Commission and the European Council.

The Great Sea Interconnector involves the construction of a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) submarine cable, linking Cyprus to Crete, and eventually to mainland Greece. Once completed, it will end Cyprus’s status as the only EU member state not connected to the continental electricity grid.

The two leaders also discussed recent developments in the Cyprus issue, ahead of a scheduled tripartite meeting on September 27, hosted by the United Nations Secretary-General, which will include the Turkish Cypriot leadership.
