Northern Greece is witnessing a long-awaited revival of its industrial footprint, as ALFA WOOD GROUP inaugurates a state-of-the-art timber processing facility in Komotini. The €29 million investment marks a major step forward for the local economy and the wood industry across the Balkans.
The new facility spans 300,000 square meters, including 60,000 sqm of building infrastructure, and boasts an annual production capacity of 200,000 cubic meters. This reopening of industrial operations in the region also introduces ALFAPAN 5+, a next-generation five-layer particleboard developed after years of research, offering enhanced durability, quality, and sustainability.
A Green Industrial Strategy with a Social Footprint
Beyond timber processing, the project includes the construction of photovoltaic parks and a 6 MW biomass energy plant, scheduled for completion by 2027. These additions highlight the group’s strong commitment to renewable energy and environmental responsibility.
At the same time, 100 new jobs will be created, a much-needed boost for the local labor market and a clear social investment in a historically industrial but economically challenged region.
ALFA WOOD GROUP: A Leader in Wood Processing
Founded in 1981, ALFA WOOD GROUP is the largest wood processing industry in Greece and a major player in Southeast Europe. The company operates facilities in Komotini, Larissa, Grevena, and Kato Nevrokopi, employing over 480 people.
With 10 distribution centers across Greece and 40% of production exported to 40 countries, the group combines strong domestic presence with international reach.
Currently, the group is implementing a €47 million investment plan across its operations to boost capacity and develop green energy projects, with 56.9% of the expenditure aligned with the Green Transition pillar of Greece’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
Reindustrialization in Greece’s North
Decades after deindustrialization emptied many of Northern Greece’s factories, the ALFA WOOD investment is being hailed as a symbol of regional resurgence. For Komotini and the broader Thrace region, it is more than just a factory reopening—it is a beacon of strategic, sustainable development.
By combining production excellence with green innovation and job creation, ALFA WOOD’s investment reflects a model for industrial policy in Europe’s transition era.
