From bankruptcy to growth – economic performance, record-breaking investments, and the new image of Greece on the international stage

At a warm gathering in New York, co-hosted by 28 Greek diaspora organizations, I had the pleasure of addressing Greeks abroad – a meeting I consider both a tradition and a privilege.

I want to make this clear: “Greece has truly come back.” From the brink of bankruptcy, we have become one of the strongest economies in Europe. This fills us all with pride and makes our work for the next steps much easier.

A decade ago, Greece borrowed at 10% interest, while France borrowed at just 1%. Today, our borrowing costs are lower than France’sWho would have imagined that? This demonstrates the resilience of the Greek people and the importance of responsible fiscal policy.

Our economy grows at twice the pace of the Eurozone, and Greece has attracted more than €30 billion in foreign direct investment over the past five years. Tourism is breaking records, with over 36 million visitors this year alone. And our success story extends far beyond tourism: it encompasses renewable energy, logistics, and services, positioning Greece as a regional hub.

In addition, the new reform for non-profit private universities, starting this October, can turn Greece into an international educational center, attracting students from around the world.

I am also delighted to share that during a discussion with the editor-in-chief of the Wall Street Journal, when asked, “Has Greece come back?” my answer was clear: “Greece has truly come back.”

Our progress is the result of hard work, responsibility, and collective effort. Greece no longer just follows developments; it shapes them, and this is the message I wanted to convey to every Greek abroad: our country is reclaiming its place in the world and looks to the future with stability and confidence.

Greece is back – and this time, for good.
