Dendias: Prioritizing F-35 Acquisition Was the Right Move – “Everything Is Judged by Results”
Greece secures fifth-generation stealth fighters ahead of potential Turkish acquisition

One day after the Trump–Erdogan meeting at the White House, Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias emphasized that the Mitsotakis government made the correct decision in prioritizing the purchase of F-35 stealth fighters, fifth-generation aircraft that enhance Greece’s strategic defense capabilities.

Dendias highlighted that this move ensures Greece acquires the jets before Turkey could potentially obtain them, reinforcing the nation’s defense readiness. The first F-35 with Greek markings is expected to land at Andravida Air Base in approximately four years.

Responding to Criticism

Dendias’ statement comes after criticism following the July 2024 announcement of the F-35 purchase:

  • Opposition voices and commentators raised concerns about wasting national resources and Greece being drawn into an arms race that might not match the actual defense needs of the Air Force.
  • Technical analyses questioned the suitability of Lockheed Martin’s F-35 for Greece and its compatibility with existing systems.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the minister reiterated that the government correctly prioritized the F-35s, sharing a video of his recent remarks before the Parliamentary Committee on Defense and Foreign Affairs.

Parliamentary Discussion

On September 24, Dendias recalled the parliamentary debate:

“Admiral (ret.) Apostolakis asked: ‘Why are you going for F-35s when the Navy has major needs?’”

Dendias responded:“Excuse me, but who will take responsibility if in the next elections, Trump wins and Erdogan succeeds in getting F-35s before Greece?”

He concluded:“We prioritized the F-35s, and it was the right decision. It has been proven right.”

He noted that while he does not assume Turkey will definitely acquire the jets, Greece securing them first is basic strategic foresight:“We will have them, and let the Turks try.”
