The Prime Minister reiterates Greece’s position on Ankara’s participation in the EU security program, emphasizing respect for international law.

Clear Message to Turkey

At the conclusion of the European Political Community Summit in Copenhagen, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis sent a firm message: Turkey can only join the Safe program if it lifts its casus belli and respects international law.

“The NATO Secretary General asked me what Greece’s position was on this issue, and I was absolutely clear and categorical. As long as Turkey keeps the casus belli on the table and directly challenges the sovereignty of Greek islands through the gray zones theory, Greece will not consent to its participation in the Safe program…”, the Prime Minister said during a press conference.

360-Degree European Security

Mitsotakis stressed that European security cannot focus solely on the eastern borders but must encompass the entire continent.

“The concept of 360-degree European security, covering both the eastern and southern borders, is reflected in the European Council’s decisions… It was also supported by other southern European countries, such as Italy, Spain, and Cyprus. Any common European defense plan will include all external European borders and, therefore, our country as well”, he emphasized.

The Prime Minister noted that Greece is moving closer to the idea of a European tool for joint defense planning, though no final decisions have been made.

Cooperation and Funding

“Countries previously considered frugal are now much more open to some form of funding instrument”, Mitsotakis added, underlining the importance of European cooperation in strengthening defense capabilities across the continent.

This position sends a clear signal to Turkey while consolidating Greece’s role in European security strategy, especially ahead of discussions by the “27” leaders on common defense measures.
