The Larissa Prosecutor’s Office reopens a case against forensic doctors, paving the way for new investigations and examinations into the victims of the catastrophic train collision.

In a move that fulfills the requests of the victims’ families, the Larissa Prosecutor’s Office has decided to retrieve from the archives the case previously filed against the forensic doctors who handled the Tempi incident, opening the way for exhumations and toxicological testing.

With this action, not only is the request of the Routsis family satisfied, but also those of the Aslanidis, Karystianou, and Konstantinidis families. The head of the Larissa Court of First Instance informed the families’ lawyers that those who wish may now submit requests for exhumation and toxicological tests, in addition to genetic identification.

It should be noted that the new case formed in this process will be separate from previous investigations, while its findings may be used in court proceedings. Moreover, if any criminal responsibility is found for the forensic doctors or other involved parties, the case will follow a separate investigative track.

According to the order from the Larissa Court of Appeals:“We are forwarding attached publications as new evidence which, in our judgment, justify examination. We request your actions within the framework of an urgent preliminary investigation, the conduct of which we order, to ascertain commission of criminal acts, prosecuted ex officio (violations of Articles 242 and 259 of the Penal Code) by the involved forensic doctors regarding the victims who were killed in Tempi on 28-2-2023 during the train collision.”

The retrieval concerns a case previously archived under Act No. 137/2024, and the First Instance Prosecutor’s Office of Larissa is now tasked with continuing the preliminary investigation as part of case consolidation.

Toxicology and Exhumations: The Next Phase of the Investigation

Within the framework of the preliminary inquiry, exhumations of victims for whom requests have been submitted will take place, while toxicological and biochemical analyses will be conducted at appropriate laboratories under the guarantees provided by the Criminal Procedure Code. These examinations may also be linked with other related cases to ensure a comprehensive and coordinated investigation.

This decision represents a significant step for transparency and justice, granting the victims’ families the opportunity to see all potential causes and circumstances of the tragedy thoroughly examined, while also raising questions regarding possible responsibilities of the forensic doctors in the initial handling of the bodies.

The public is closely following these developments, as the Tempi disaster has generated intense political and societal attention, highlighting not only transportation safety but also the importance of transparent legal and forensic procedures in cases involving fatalities.
