Metlen Energy & Metals, in collaboration with international energy giants Shell and TotalEnergies, secured key contracts to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Bulgaria for the period 2025-2026. This critical move is part of Bulgaria’s broader energy security plan, strategically utilizing the Greek FSRU Alexandroupolis terminal.
From the U.S. to Greece and Bulgaria
The four LNG shipments destined for Bulgaria will originate from U.S. terminals, with transportation routed through the Alexandroupolis LNG terminal in Greece.
Specifically, Metlen and TotalEnergies will deliver shipments in October and December 2025, while Metlen’s collaboration with Shell covers deliveries scheduled for January and March 2026.

The Crucial Role of FSRU Alexandroupolis
The FSRU terminal in Alexandroupolis is emerging as a key energy hub for Southeastern Europe, serving both the Greek market and neighboring countries like Bulgaria.
This agreement is part of the 2025-2029 program approved by the Bulgarian cabinet aiming to strengthen the country’s energy security by exploiting new infrastructure and alternative supply sources.
Energy Security and Geopolitical Dimensions
Winning these contracts in a competitive tender involving over ten international companies highlights the growing market interest in the Alexandroupolis terminal and Greece’s strategic position as an energy hub.
Moreover, sourcing LNG from the U.S. reflects Europe’s broader effort to achieve energy independence and security, especially in light of geopolitical developments and the need to reduce dependence on unstable suppliers.
Prospects for Southeastern Europe
The cooperation between Metlen, Shell, and TotalEnergies signals increased interconnectivity and utilization of new energy infrastructures.
The Alexandroupolis FSRU acts as a critical gateway for regional gas supply, with promising prospects for further expanding the natural gas market, supporting energy stability and sustainable growth for neighboring countries.
This agreement underscores the importance of collaboration between Greek and international companies in building a more secure and diversified energy market in the Balkans.
