Mitsotakis: “Meetings with all neighbors” – Maritime zones and geopolitical balance on the table

A New Phase of Geopolitical Movement
The Greek government is launching a move with major geopolitical implications. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, speaking before Parliament, announced Athens’ intention to invite “all neighbors” — as he emphasized — to a joint meeting of all Mediterranean coastal states. The goal: to address key pending issues such as maritime zones, energy security, and regional cooperation.
This statement is not just a diplomatic gesture; it signals a broader strategic shift. Athens seeks to position itself at the center of a new Mediterranean framework of dialogue, potentially reshaping the map of alliances in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Maritime Zones at the Core
Mitsotakis’ explicit reference to maritime zones was no coincidence. The absence of clearly defined boundaries has long been a source of friction among countries in the region — particularly between Greece and Turkey, but also involving Libya, Egypt, and Cyprus.
At the same time, the issue carries enormous energy significance. Maritime zones determine control over undersea energy resources, including natural gas deposits that could transform Europe’s energy independence. As a result, the U.S. has shown keen interest, given that American energy giants are already active or planning to invest in exploration projects in the area.
The U.S. Role and Kimberly Guilfoyle’s Arrival
The imminent arrival of Kimberly Guilfoyle, the new U.S. ambassador to Greece, is expected to shape the next phase of this geopolitical process. Washington appears committed to promoting cooperation and removing barriers to economic and energy activity in the Mediterranean.
Guilfoyle — a prominent political figure with close ties to Donald Trump — adds an additional layer of interest, especially given the involvement of Massad Boulos, Trump’s in-law, who reportedly plays a quiet but significant role in facilitating dialogue among Mediterranean states.
A Message to Turkey
Mitsotakis’ phrase “with all our neighbors” was widely interpreted as including Turkey. That in itself is significant, considering the long-standing disputes over the breadth of maritime zones and differing interpretations of the Law of the Sea.
Athens aims to project an image of initiative, stability, and legality, rather than appearing to move under external pressure. Government sources underline that “Greece has nothing to fear from dialogue, provided it is based on international law.”
A Step Toward a New Mediterranean Order?
If this initiative materializes, it could represent a historic diplomatic turning point — a chance to build a regional framework of cooperation in areas that have long been defined by rivalry and mistrust.
Yet, the success of such a conference will depend on whether the participating states are truly ready to set aside unilateral claims and revisionist agendas.
In any case, Mitsotakis’ statement officially opens the conversation about a new Mediterranean order — with Greece taking the lead, and the focus squarely on the Aegean, energy, and regional stability.
