Alexis Tsipras returns to the spotlight with his new book, “Ithaca”, set to be released in the second half of November by Gutemberg Publications. The book is seen as a harbinger of rapid political developments, as rumors intensify regarding the former Prime Minister potentially creating a new political party after resigning from parliament.
With over 600 pages and 11+1 chapters, “Ithaca” presents a vision for the future of the Left and Greece. As Tsipras writes: “A people who stop dreaming of better are ready to accept the worst.” The book is not merely a record of the past; it is a declaration of hope and forward-looking perspective, encouraging reflection on the present and the future.
The narrative covers key moments in Greek history: the Prespa Agreement, foreign policy, small and large battles, steps forward and backward. According to the publisher, the book emphasizes the need for a grassroots movement, capable of giving concrete shape to a vision of justice and progress.
In the chapters covering 2015-2019, Tsipras recounts the harsh stance of the creditors, threats of Greece’s exit from the EU, bank closures, the referendum, and his meetings with foreign leaders such as Merkel, Hollande, and Putin. The storytelling takes on the character of a political thriller and historical document, enriched by the author’s personal, confessional, and self-critical perspective.
Additionally, “Ithaca” examines Tsipras’ path from childhood and adolescence, through his radicalization in the KNE and the Left, to his rise as leader of SYRIZA and Prime Minister. Readers gain insight into the values, circumstances, and decisions that shaped both the author and the country’s trajectory, while also addressing developments after 2019 and the internal crisis of SYRIZA.
The symbolism of Ithaca is central. As Prime Minister, Tsipras announced the official end of the memoranda in 2018 from the island’s port, stating: “Ithaca is only the beginning. The hard times are behind us.” The book continues this message, paving the way for potential political developments and a new progressive narrative in Greece.
With “Ithaca”, Tsipras aims to connect the memory of the past with the strategy of the future, crafting a narrative that is personal, political, and cultural, and laying the groundwork for a possible political comeback.
