With 741 hectares at ‘Aenaon’ and 46 key interventions, Attica gains a living green lung connecting neighborhoods and parks.

Attica is undergoing a radical transformation, and Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias is leading the most ambitious green urban revival of recent decades. The Metropolitan Park ‘Aenaon’ at Faliro Bay becomes the flagship of a project that unites Pedion tou Areos, Attiko Alsos, and Parko Tritsi, along with dozens of other public spaces, creating a “green ocean” that is reshaping the city’s map.

Hardalias emphasized: “This is not a showcase project. This is a living, 741-hectare green lung that belongs to the citizens, not the state.” With €27 million in EU funds and 46 key interventions, the initiative aims to upgrade infrastructure, boost urban biodiversity, and connect parks with bike lanes and pedestrian paths.

The creation of a 17.5 km coastal bike and pedestrian route, the redevelopment of adjacent Tae Kwon Do facilities into a modern exhibition, conference, and concert center, and the inclusion of the Koutala Hill in Vyronas and the Park of Fertilizers in Drapetsona, make this project unprecedented for Greek urban planning.

Through the “Attica 2030” strategy, the region sets goals combining environmental sustainability, social cohesion, and cultural activities. As Dimitris Drosis explained: “Green spaces are not just for aesthetics; they are part of the city’s life.”

The plan was presented in Brussels, during the 23rd European Week of Regions and Cities, highlighting the international dimension and partnerships with municipalities and European agencies. ‘Aenaon’ is not just a park—it is a symbol of a new era for Attica, where citizens can live, exercise, and enjoy recreation in an accessible green network.

Hardalias concluded: “Attica is breathing again. And this breath belongs to its people.”

With this ambitious project, the capital becomes a model of sustainable urban living, where green spaces translate into life, community connection, and quality of living. Metropolitan parks are returning to their natural owners: the citizens of the basin.
