The Defense Minister stresses the Monument unites, not divides – his statement also highlights his political image.

Nikos Dendias, Minister of National Defense, took a clear stance regarding the Unknown Soldier Monument amid the recent political controversies sparked by demonstrations from relatives of the victims of the Tempi tragedy.

Through a written statement on social media, Dendias emphasized that the Monument must not be used as a tool for political display or societal division. He stated:

“It is a place intertwined with national memory, a monument honoring those who sacrificed for the Fatherland and Nation.”

The minister reiterated the position of the President of the Hellenic Parliament, Konstantinos Tasoulas, that the monument should be sterilized from current political events and remain a timeless symbol of national struggles.

In reference to the Tempi tragedy, Dendias highlighted that the Monument became associated with the society’s universal demand for justice, while the Prime Minister’s presence at the site demonstrated respect for the victims.

Finally, the Defense Minister stated:

“The Unknown Soldier Monument unites Greeks, now and forever. The Ministry and the Armed Forces will not treat it as an instrument of politics or societal division. Respect for the dead of the National Struggles and for history is a collective duty and responsibility for all of us.”

The statement comes at a critical political moment, as analysts suggest Dendias aims to build a leadership image and position himself as a future contender for New Democracy leadership. By presenting himself as a symbolic guardian of unity and national respect, he maintains a tone of neutrality while enhancing his political profile for future party developments.

The Monument remains a place of respect and unity, but Dendias’ public statement also highlights his political strategy, emphasizing the image of a stable and nationally committed leader.
