Justice Minister Giorgos Floridis unveiled a nationwide plan to modernize court facilities, aiming for better conditions for staff and improved services for citizens.

Ambitious Program to Upgrade Court Infrastructure Across Greece

The Ministry of Justice announced today an extensive program of courthouse upgrades with a budget of €500 million, including:

  • New courthouses
  • Renovations and reconstructions of existing buildings
  • Leasing of temporary facilities to house judicial services

The presentation was attended by Justice Minister Giorgos Floridis, Deputy Minister Ioannis Bougas, and Secretary-General Pelops Laskos, alongside MPs, mayors, regional governors, and representatives from bar associations.

“The program has two parts: public-private partnerships and projects carried out under public works procedures, fully funded by national resources,” Minister Floridis stated.

Goals and Significance of the Program

The program aims to ensure better working conditions for justice officials and higher-quality services for citizens.

Deputy Minister Ioannis Bougas emphasized that the Judicial Map has reduced court formations from 227 to 113, significantly improving accessibility and efficiency.

“No citizen in mainland Greece is more than 35 minutes from a courthouse, and island courts have been upgraded to regional branches of primary courts.”

Key Projects and Partnerships

The program includes:

  • PPPs: Courthouses in Edessa, Serres, Kilkis
  • Reconstruction: Courthouses in Thessaloniki, Lamia, Volos, Karditsa, Trikala, Heraklion, Rethymno
  • New constructions: Alexandroupoli, Giannitsa
  • Special renovations: Historic buildings such as Komotini, Corinth, Lamia, Volos, Amfissa

The total budget for these projects exceeds €300 million, while additional funds from the Recovery Fund and Attica region bring the total financing to €500 million, with a completion target of 2030.

Management and Technical Oversight

Secretary-General Pelops Laskos highlighted that the management of these funds does not burden citizens or increase fees, relying instead on the government’s successful fiscal policy.

The TAXDIK now manages the maintenance and operational needs of courthouses, relieving judges from administrative duties and accelerating their judicial work.

Modern and Functional Courthouses Across Greece

The program aims to deliver:

  • Modern buildings with upgraded facilities
  • Faster citizen service
  • Restoration and enhancement of historic judicial buildings

“For the first time, TAXDIK implements and finances such a comprehensive program, with a short timeframe and exclusive focus on the Greek regions,” Laskos noted.
