In a historic moment for the National Health System (NHS), Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis visited the renovated Emergency Department (ER) of Attikon Hospital, sending a clear message of reform and progress.
The new ER has expanded from 800 sq.m. to 2,500 sq.m., increasing simultaneous treatment capacity from 3 to 36 beds, while resuscitation beds have risen from 3 to 8–12, with an integrated ICU within the ER and state-of-the-art equipment. This upgrade not only enhances infrastructure but also introduces a new operational philosophy, enabling faster patient flow and improved emergency care management.
Minister Georgiadis emphasized: “Today is a historic day for the NHS. Attikon’s new ER marks a turning point in public healthcare”, adding that the government is not merely making promises but investing in quality care and patient safety.
According to the Minister, the improvements at the ER include:
- Increased space and capacity for simultaneous patient treatment.
- Advanced medical equipment for high-quality care.
- Reduced waiting times and faster patient transfers.
- Integrated ICU within the ER for immediate critical care.
Georgiadis also acknowledged that, even on a day of celebration, criticism exists, but “what matters is that we are taking a giant step forward for the NHS”. He highlighted that this investment sets the path for the future of public healthcare, where technology and infrastructure work hand-in-hand with human resources and efficient organization.
Attikon’s ER is also an educational hub, providing facilities for medical students and young doctors, ensuring that the next generation of healthcare professionals is fully prepared to meet modern challenges.
The Minister concluded with a message of optimism and determination: “The NHS is evolving and improving. From today, Attikon’s ER is not just a treatment center – it is the new era for healthcare in Athens”.
With this upgrade, the government aims to deliver tangible results and optimism, turning Attikon into a model for the entire NHS, while improving efficiency, safety, and the quality of healthcare services for all citizens.
