€600 million in aid for 2.4 million citizens
This November, the government will begin distributing the first phase of its new financial support package, totaling €2.5 billion, as announced by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF).
According to the Ministry of National Economy and Finance, around 2.4 million citizens will receive €600 million in total through two main measures:
- A rent refund of up to €800, and
- A permanent €250 allowance for pensioners, uninsured elderly, and disability benefit recipients.
Both payments are scheduled for Friday, November 28.
Rent refund: Up to €800 per household
Approximately 1 million households will benefit from the rent refund, which provides up to €800, plus an additional €50 per dependent child.
The measure applies to tenants who paid rent in 2024, either for a primary residence or student housing, and will recur annually every November as a permanent support measure.
No application is required, but recipients must meet specific income and property criteria.
Income limits:
- Single: up to €20,000
- Couple without children: up to €28,000
- Couple with 1 child: up to €32,000
- Couple with 2 children: up to €36,000
- +€4,000 for each additional child
Property value limits:
- Single: up to €120,000
- Couple without children: up to €140,000
- With 1 child: up to €160,000
- With 2 children: up to €180,000
The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) will verify eligibility automatically using data from rental declarations and income tax filings.
€250 allowance for pensioners and vulnerable groups
On November 28, more than 1.4 million citizens will also receive the €250 allowance, including:
- Pensioners aged 65 and over
- Uninsured elderly
- Recipients of disability benefits
The amount is automatically doubled to €500 for couples where both are eligible.
Eligibility criteria:
- Annual income up to €14,000 (single) or €26,000 (married)
- Property value up to €200,000 and €300,000, respectively
The allowance is tax-free, non-transferable, and protected from seizure, while not offset against debts to the state or e-EFKA.
Double benefit for thousands of households
Thousands of citizens will receive both benefits – the rent refund and the €250 allowance – particularly pensioners or people with disabilities who live in rented accommodation and meet all eligibility criteria.
Next phase: Pension increases in December
With the January 2026 pensions (paid just before Christmas), around 2.5 million pensioners will see new increases. Those who still have a “personal difference” will, for the first time in years, receive a partial increase, equal to 50% of the standard rise.
The €2.5 billion package also includes tax cuts, wage increases in both the public and private sectors, and pay raises for uniformed officers – measures that will be implemented progressively over the next seven months.
