Athens transforms into a global energy hub on November 6–7, hosting the Partnership for Transatlantic Energy Cooperation (P-TEC). The two-day summit brings together top US officials and energy giants including ExxonMobil, Cheniere, ConocoPhillips, Venture Global, alongside European and Greek energy players.
Sources report that discussions focus on long-term LNG supply agreements, aiming to gradually replace Russian gas volumes by 2028. Greece is emerging as a critical entry point for US LNG into the Balkans, Central Europe, and Ukraine.
Geopolitical significance
The presence of senior US officials—Chris Wright, Doug Bergam, Michael Rigas—underscores Greece’s strategic importance for European energy security. Athens is positioned as a key node in reducing Europe’s dependence on Russian energy, through investments in LNG infrastructure, electricity interconnections, and offshore hydrocarbon exploration.
The conference also revives the “3+1” format (Greece, Cyprus, Israel, USA), aimed at strengthening energy integration in the Eastern Mediterranean. With facilities in Revythoussa and Alexandroupolis, Greece solidifies its role as a strategic partner of the United States.
Investment and technology
Tech giants Google and Amazon participate, highlighting the energy-tech synergy of the new era. Key focus areas include:
- LNG and pipeline infrastructure development,
- Electricity interconnections across the Eastern Mediterranean,
- Deployment of AI tools to optimize energy systems.
Greek Minister of Energy, Stavros Papastavrou, emphasized: “Greece is at the center of global energy developments. We aim to strengthen our position and secure commercial deals that bring real economic value.”
Statistics & forecasts
- Greece already serves a crucial portion of Europe’s gas needs through Revythoussa and Alexandroupolis LNG terminals.
- The Eastern Mediterranean can cover 12–14% of Europe’s LNG requirements, reducing geopolitical dependence on Russia.
- Initial commercial deals are expected to finalize in 2025, marking a new era in Greek-US energy collaboration.
The P-TEC summit is set to position Athens as a reference point in the emerging Europe–US energy architecture, reinforcing the country’s role in regional energy security and geopolitics.
