“Kikilias: Greece a Key US Hub in Shipping, Energy, and FSRU Projects”

Greece’s Minister of Shipping and Island Policy, Vasilis Kikilias, emphasized in an interview with OPEN TV the strategic significance of Greek-American cooperation in shipping and energy, focusing on FSRUs (Floating Storage Regasification Units) and the country’s ports.

“US investments in FSRUs and our ports are of immense importance,” the minister said, adding that the Greek-owned fleet, representing around 20% of global shipping capacity, plays a critical role in transporting LNG and goods worldwide.

“Over 80% of global trade moves by sea. US confidence in our country and the leading role of Greek shipping create tremendous opportunities for investment, development, and jobs,” Kikilias stressed.

Regional Cooperation and Geopolitical Significance

Kikilias also highlighted the importance of regional cooperation between Greece, Cyprus, Israel, and Egypt, describing it as essential for stability and connectivity in the Eastern Mediterranean. In a period of geopolitical tension and shifts, such collaboration is seen as pivotal for energy security and regional stability.

Greek-Turkish Relations and National Security

Regarding Greece–Turkey relations, the minister emphasized the need for dialogue and cooperation, but made clear:

“First and foremost, we safeguard our national sovereign rights.”

At the same time, he noted the promotion of major defense programs for the Hellenic Coast Guard, strengthening the security and surveillance of Greece’s maritime borders.

Investments, Infrastructure, and Jobs

According to Kikilias, strategic cooperation with the US opens doors for:

• American investments in FSRUs and ports, critical for energy security.
• Strengthening the Greek shipping sector, with significant participation in global trade.
• Creation of new jobs and infrastructure development with long-term economic impact.
