The Greek government is moving forward with a major reform of OPEKEPE, aiming for full transparency, reliability, and fairness in agricultural subsidies. At the heart of the plan is the creation of a digital geospatial map of the country, enabling a clear distinction between eligible and non-eligible land for aid.
Simultaneously, a new method of recording goats and sheep through electronic “ear tags” will be implemented, while inspections will become more targeted and effective, using risk analysis tools. The plan also includes cross-checking property records to eliminate fake leases and ensure that subsidies reach only genuine farmers.
Vice President Kostis Hatzidakis emphasized that “this reform is a major milestone that will decisively enhance the credibility of the system and separate the wheat from the chaff.” Minister of Rural Development Kostas Tsiaras added that “Action Plan 2 fully reflects the government’s commitment to a new era of transparency, where subsidies are delivered fairly and on time to the farmers who work hard every day.”
By adopting digital tools, electronic databases, and rigorous inspections, Greece aims to enter a new era of agricultural management, bringing full order to the crucial subsidy system and ensuring European funds are used properly.
