The former Prime Minister launched a full-scale assault on Kyriakos Mitsotakis, leaving open the possibility of founding a new party — with patriotism, political integrity and state interventionism in the economy as his central pillars.

“Today’s New Democracy has mutated. It is unfortunately heading straight toward the rocks, declared Antonis Samaras in his highly discussed interview on ANT1, marking one of his sharpest interventions since his break with Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

While he did not directly confirm that he plans to establish a new political movement, his rhetoric sounded like a manifesto for a new era. With a calm but firm tone, he invoked a sense of “national duty,” stressing that “Greece needs a new beginning, a leadership with vision and courage for change.”

A political rupture with New Democracy

Antonis Samaras accused Kyriakos Mitsotakis of institutional arroganceelitism, and ineffectiveness, claiming that the Prime Minister transformed New Democracy into “a blue-colored hybrid of Simitism.” With that remark, he distanced himself from the technocratic and neoliberal profile of the current government, proposing instead a patriotic and socially conscious political model emphasizing state intervention and social justice.

“The state has a role in my model. It must see injustice and correct it. Only then will it stand by the citizen,”he said pointedly.

 Harsh criticism of economic policy

The former Prime Minister categorically rejected the government’s neoliberal economic approach, underlining that Greece now has the lowest purchasing power in Europe, while public debt has risen from €317 billion to €362 billion.“The energy policy, the trading system — everything is wrong. It locks prices at their peak. The result is an exhausted people and a trapped economy,” Samaras declared.

 “New Democracy no longer appeals”

In a symbolic reference, Samaras cited Melina Mercouri, saying: “Today’s New Democracy doesn’t appeal anymore.” He argued that patriotic ideas and values he has long represented are now becoming mainstream, adding that the country is entering a new phase — “the post-Transition of the post-Transition.”“Greece needs leadership with integrity, national vision, and determination. No more management — we need politics with a soul,” he emphasized.

 A return driven by duty

Samaras became emotional when he spoke about his personal motivation:“I’ve held every political office. I’m not driven by ambition. What remains is my sense of national duty. I will decide calmly, and when the time comes, I will speak clearly to the Greek people.”

Analysts note that his phrasing strongly suggests a political comeback — not as speculation, but as intention.

Samaras’ interview was not just a statement — it was a declaration of purpose. With fierce criticism of Mitsotakis, attacks on European elites, and talk of a “new beginning for Hellenism,” the former Prime Minister positions himself outside New Democracy but still very much inside the political arena.

The word “rupture” was not rhetorical — it was a warning.
