Gerapetritis: Young Ambassadors Worldwide for a Global Hellenism – Greece Connects the World!

The 2nd Diaspora Youth Conference opened at the Foundation for the Hellenic World, with Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis emphasizing the importance of maintaining a vibrant global Greek community as a core pillar of national cohesion.

According to Gerapetritis, this year’s conference is not a standalone initiative but the starting point for a systematic strategy aimed at strengthening relations with Greek communities abroad. “We commit to monitoring all actions you will undertake in the coming years,” he said.

International Participation:

• This year, the conference hosts young Greeks from 31 countries across five continents, up from 16 countries and four continents last year.
• The Minister highlighted that “Hellenism knows no borders; wherever a Greek lives, they will maintain strong ties with their homeland.”

Three-Year National Strategic Plan for the Greek Diaspora: A centerpiece of the Minister’s speech was the strategic plan, designed to serve as a “cradle of Hellenism”, bringing diaspora communities closer to Greece. The plan includes:

• Support for Greek communities and cultural hubs worldwide
• Development of educational and language programs
• Promotion of the Greek language as a global language of culture

Global Challenges and Opportunities: Gerapetritis emphasized the role of diaspora youth in addressing today’s complex international challenges:

• Climate crisis
• Food security crisis
• Health and pandemic challenges
• Ongoing armed conflicts worldwide

“All contemporary challenges are global in nature and concern us all,” he said, noting that young Greeks can act as active ambassadors, creating strong cultural hubs around embassies and consulates.

Key Dates and Initiatives:

• In 2026, Greece will celebrate the first-ever World Greek Language Day on February 9, following its recent recognition by UNESCO as a language of global significance.
• Gerapetritis encouraged youth to keep the Greek language alive and highlight its contribution to arts, philosophy, and culture.

“Think big. You will be the ones to take the reins and help shape the world. With the values of your family and the values that dwell in your soul, carry Greece always within you.”
