The Mitsotakis government is preparing a “historic” December for Greece’s agricultural sector, with substantial support totaling €3.7 billion. According to the Prime Minister’s Sunday message, the payments include the advance of basic subsidies, coupled payments, compensations for livestock and rural development programs, aiming to benefit real producers, not phantom leases or fictitious claims.
“December will be a month of real support for farmers,” the Prime Minister stressed, noting that the new subsidy system enforces strict controls and transparency, fully aligned with European regulations. The temporarily reduced advance payment is due to incomplete declarations from approximately 44,000 farmers, but all allocated funds for 2025 will be fully distributed.
At the same time, the government is modernizing OPEKEPE (the Greek paying agency for agricultural subsidies), ensuring fair and accurate allocation. For the first time, a “second allocation” will reward honest farmers with higher payments than in previous years.
The new framework promises a triple benefit: a transparent management system, fair distribution to producers, and no loss of EU funds. Additionally, the support includes compensation for damages from livestock diseases, such as sheep and goat pox.
The government emphasizes that this strategy strengthens income security, productivity, and sector stability, while also supporting the overall Greek economy. The coming weeks will be crucial for the full implementation of the plan, which reflects political continuity and targeted support for the agricultural community.
