LNG, Safe, Diplomacy: Chatzivasileiou Reveals the Global Power Game

LNG, Safe, Diplomacy: Chatzivasileiou Reveals the Global Power Game
Greece at the Strategic Center of Energy and Security

As a member of the New Democracy Party and an adjunct professor of international relations, I witness daily how Greece is transforming into a pillar of regional stability. Geopolitics is not theory; it is action and strategic planning. Today, I want to share how Greece has emerged as a key player across energy, strategic, and diplomatic arenas—from Ukraine and Russia to the Middle East and relations with the United States.

Greece at the Heart of Energy and Security

Energy diplomacy has become a geopolitical weapon. “Greece has become the main gateway for LNG into the European market,” I have stated repeatedly. Thanks to investments in Revythousa and Alexandroupolis, and the development of the vertical energy corridor, Greece now provides energy security not only domestically but also to neighboring countries such as Bulgaria and Ukraine.

Europe’s decision to reduce dependence on Russian gas and turn to U.S. LNG gave Greece a strategic role. Energy is no longer just a commercial transaction—it is a matter of security.

Meanwhile, electricity interconnection projects like Greece-Cyprus-Israel (GSI) and Greece-Egypt (GREGY) ensure energy diversification and reinforce regional stability. Turkey attempted to instrumentalize such initiatives, but Greece advanced resolutely, applying international law.

Chatzivasileiou Reveals: Greece’s Role in the Middle East and Diplomatic Initiatives

The Middle East remains fragile. Greece actively participates in peace and humanitarian initiatives, such as hosting children from Gaza in Greek hospitals. Simultaneously, our country supports the strategic defeat of terrorist organizations like Hamas, aiming for a long-term two-state solution where Israelis and Palestinians can coexist safely.

“Today, priority is calm and stability—not the immediate search for a mediating figure. Time and patience are essential for implementing the Abraham Accords and creating minimum trust in the region,” I emphasize.

SAFE and Turkey: How Greece Maintained an Advantage in International Security

Turkey’s inclusion—or lack thereof—in the SAFE program was critical. Greece made clear that as long as casus belli and gray zones exist, Turkey would not receive European defense funding. The pressure applied by Greek diplomacy, under Giorgos Gerapetritis and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs team, ensured unanimity principles in country participation.

Turkey, using its familiar rhetoric, tries to challenge or coerce international initiatives—but Greece remains steadfast, calm, and decisive.

Strategic Alliance with the United States and Business Cooperation

Relations with the U.S. are at their historic peak. Strategic LNG agreements, collaborations in healthcare, digital technology, and business investments show that Greece is not merely a spectator but an active partner with shared security and economic interests.

“This collaboration positions Greece as a pioneer in diplomacy and energy strategy at both European and global levels,” I note.

Ukraine, Russia, and LNG: Greece as a Key Player in European Energy Security

In the Ukraine war, Greece does not sit idly. Our country provides critical energy infrastructure and contributes to European initiatives aimed at ending the conflict. The strategic ability to secure LNG and other energy flows makes Greece a pivotal European player, demonstrating our determination and competence in the geopolitical arena.

Greece stands at the center of the global power game—not as a spectator, but as a strategic, reliable player. From energy security to U.S. diplomacy, from the Middle East to Ukraine, our country records achievements that enhance its international stature.

As I declare: “Greece does not watch; it decides, leads, and protects its interests, always guided by stability and security.”
