Guido Crosetto highlights U.S. strategic focus on China, cites Trump’s Europe stance.

Italy’s Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto, stated that former U.S. President Donald Trump made it clear that Europe matters little—or not at all—to him.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Crosetto linked Trump’s approach to the broader trajectory of U.S. foreign policy:

“The path of American policy was already clear before Trump took office. What he did was accelerate a course of no return. The United States is in an increasingly intense competition with China, and every act and decision must be interpreted within this framework. Trump simply made clear that in this competition, the EU matters little—or not at all.”

Crosetto emphasized that every U.S. act or decision is guided by a single objective: strengthening America in its competition with China.

Trump on Europe: “On a Trajectory of Cultural Extinction”

The Trump administration portrays Europe as a continent on the verge of “cultural extinction” within the next two decades, attributing the alleged decline to migration and deeper European integration.

These conclusions are part of the new U.S. National Security Strategy, a 33-page document released Thursday, which clearly embodies the “America First” doctrine. The strategy serves as a roadmap for maintaining U.S. global power and influence, while also offering indirect support to nationalist and far-right European parties.

According to the strategy, Europe faces an economic downturn, but the “real problem” lies in EU actions that limit national sovereignty and political freedom, immigration policies that “transform European identity,” and mechanisms of censorship and political repression.

Reproducing “Great Replacement” Rhetoric

The text echoes arguments from the “Great Replacement” theory, warning that some European countries risk becoming “predominantly non-European” and that the continent faces a “real risk of cultural extinction.” It further predicts that if current trends continue, Europe will be unrecognizable within 20 years.

The document frames U.S. priorities as fostering resistance within EU member states to the EU’s current trajectory, while promoting greater European responsibility for defense and expanded access for American companies to European markets.
