A sharp cold front is currently affecting Greece, with at least 53 meteorological stations recording sub-zero temperatures on Saturday morning, according to the National Observatory of Athens.
From the northern mainland to the central and southern mountains, temperatures fell below zero, creating frost conditions unusual for this time of year. The lowest recorded temperature was in Lailias, Serres, at –5.6 °C.
Top sub-zero morning temperatures (selected stations): • Lailias, Serres: –5.6 °C • Smolikas Dragonlake: –4.7 °C • Seli: –4.6 °C • Ochyro, Nevrokopi: –4.1 °C • Sesi, Parnassus: –3.9 °C • Perithori, Nevrokopi: –3.8 °C • Tymfi Dragonlake: –3.6 °C • Nevrokopi: –3.3 °C
These sub-zero temperatures are causing disruptions in traffic, agriculture, and infrastructure (pipes, transportation), especially in areas unaccustomed to such intense frost.
Meteorologists warn that frost in the early hours may continue, especially in northern and mountainous areas, even if temperatures rise slightly later in the day.
This sudden temperature drop creates urgent challenges in heating, electricity, and public safety, with icy roads posing significant risks to both residents and travelers. Source: pagenews.gr
