I speak from the conviction that my experience in politics and public affairs has given me: when you see great achievements by Greeks abroad, you must not ignore or downplay them — you must defend and celebrate them.
This is what I thought when I visited New York and went to the offices of SELLAS Life Sciences Group, Inc. — the company founded and led by my friend Angelos Stergiou, which is now listed on Nasdaq under SLS and is developing innovative immunotherapies for cancer.
It wasn’t just a “politician visiting a friend” moment — it was a meeting with a Greek success story that transcends borders, showing how science, innovation, and free markets can genuinely change lives.
What SELLAS Does and Why It Matters
SELLAS Life Sciences is a biotech company focused on cutting-edge cancer therapies, including:
- Galinpepimut‑S (GPS), an immunotherapeutic vaccine targeting the WT1 protein, currently in clinical trials for acute myeloid leukemia (AML), with promising results that could improve survival in a patient group desperately in need of new treatments.
- SLS009, a selective CDK9 inhibitor, granted Orphan Drug Designation by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for AML, showing strong Phase 2 results.
The company is expanding international partnerships and attracting major investors — including BlackRock increasing its stake by over 5%, demonstrating strong confidence in SELLAS on Nasdaq.
Responding to Malicious Comments
When I spoke publicly about my visit to Angelos Stergiou, some people — motivated by petty political jealousy — started posting sarcastic comments. One, from user @pavpol2222, was so emblematic that I felt compelled to defend Angelos publicly.
My defense was not just for a friend — it was for a Greek voice at the heart of global innovation. What is happening at SELLAS is not “luck.” It is the result of hard work, vision, and calculated risk. This is not a matter of envy but of national pride and political foresight.
Political and Geopolitical Implications
At a time when Greece struggles to strengthen research and innovation, we must support those who lead by example. SELLAS is not just a company — it’s a proof that Greeks can excel globally, attract investment, credibility, and technology back home.
The company’s solid funding, growing capitalization, and international partnerships show that Greece has an opportunity to foster a pro-innovation environment.
Capitalism, Free Markets, and the Greece I Envision
When Angelos Stergiou talks about faith in Capitalism, Free Markets, Innovation, and Risk, he is not speaking theoretically. He is speaking in results. And these results are:
- Life-saving therapies.
- International funding and recognition.
- Greek participation in global research.
This is the Greece I want — a Greece unafraid of big ideas, undistracted by envy, and unwilling to get trapped in petty political disputes.
The Political Stake in 2026
I hope that 2026 will be the year these ideas come to fruition — not only for the thousands of lives saved by clinical research but as a model for Greece itself. A Greece that supports innovation, encourages entrepreneurship, and promotes pride in Greeks who succeed globally.
You make us proud, Angelos. This is the Greece we want. — Not just in words, but in action.
