Democracy is not à la carte. You either defend it everywhere—or you don’t defend it at all.
I speak plainly and without euphemisms. For days now, the people of Iran have taken to the streets demanding Democracy, respect for human rights, and a better life. And how does the theocratic regime respond? With violence, repression, and deaths. This is not breaking news; it is the grim routine of a regime that fears freedom more than anything else.
And yet, those who once flooded X with posts about “struggles,” slogans, and raised fists are now nowhere to be found. Do you see them? Of course you don’t — they simply aren’t there. Because repression in Iran does not fit their preferred narrative. Once again, the Left’s long-standing hypocrisy is laid bare. Apparently, there is “good” repression and “bad” repression. Don’t get confused, they tell us. I only recognize one confusion: confusing ideology with truth.
I have said it before and I will say it again: I tolerate no state repression, by anyone, anywhere. Democracy does not come with quotation marks, nor does it allow geopolitical discounts. If you claim to stand for human rights, you must defend them in Tehran as well.
The Bigger Picture
Iran is not a “distant issue.” It is a critical geopolitical actor in the Middle East, with a destabilizing role, influence through proxies, nuclear ambitions, and alliances that openly challenge the international order. Its internal unrest is inseparable from the global chessboard: every crack in the regime sends shockwaves from the Persian Gulf to the Eastern Mediterranean.
Greece, firmly anchored in the Western world, must speak with clarity. We must stand for Democracy, stand by Israel when it is unfairly targeted, and demand consistency from those who claim moral superiority. Selective condemnation is not morality; it is convenience.
The Parapolitical Reality
Silence is never neutral. It is a stance. And that stance reveals ideological affinities disguised as “humanitarian sensitivity” only when it suits them. On social media, the pattern is clear: when repression does not align with the narrative, it disappears. This is not activism; it is performative opportunism.
Let me be absolutely clear: Democracy has no camps. There are no “our” victims and “their” victims. You either stand with people demanding freedom, or you side—by action or silence—with the regimes that crush them.
And to those who will be irritated by this: be irritated. Truth does not ask for permission. The Iranians in the streets deserve a voice. And I will continue to provide it — without footnotes, without double standards, and without fear.
