As European leaders gather in Brussels for the extraordinary informal EU Summit, the Greek government has made it clear that it will align with the EU position, defending uncompromisingly the principles of international law and territorial integrity.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who postponed his trip to Davos due to bad weather, is heading to Brussels to take part in discussions on both Trump’s Greenland ambitions and the proposal for a Peace Council promoted by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis told Action 24 that Greece expresses reservations about the Peace Council, noting that it goes beyond UN Security Council Resolution 2803 on Gaza and carries permanent characteristics. Athens will remain present within the EU framework and will make decisions only in full coordination with European partners.
On Greenland, Greece emphasizes that the island belongs to an EU member state, and any challenge to its sovereignty will face EU unity, while maintaining an excellent strategic relationship with the United States.
Trump’s recent threats of tariffs and his controversial Davos speech, in which he called Greenland “our territory,” have raised concern and skepticism in European capitals. Greece participates in discussions aiming for full support of Denmark and Greenland and the protection of international law in the Arctic.
Today’s Summit is a test for transatlantic relations, as European leaders consider measures to counterbalance U.S. pressure, while Greece chooses value-based realism, upholding core international rights without undermining its strategic ties with the U.S.
