Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople has publicly addressed the ongoing war in Ukraine, recent attacks against him from Russian sources, and broader geopolitical and ecclesiastical pressures in a forceful interview with the Greek newspaper Ta Nea.

Unwavering Stance Against Propaganda

Bartholomew directly rebutted what he described as attacks launched by the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service and pro‑Russian outlets. He dismissed these attempts to influence public opinion and undermine his leadership, asserting that he is not afraid of:

  • fabricated or misleading information
  • orchestrated attacks by what he called “dirty services”
  • Russian internet trolls
  • websites acting as proxies for Russian propaganda

He stressed that their efforts cannot hide the truth or mislead people forever, and that those spreading disinformation should instead fear judgment in the afterlife—if they believe in one.

The War in Ukraine and Its Nature

Bartholomew reiterated his long‑standing position that the war in Ukraine is not a “holy” conflict, but rather an expansionist war which he described in strong moral terms, and which reflects dangerous geopolitical ambitions rather than religious or civilizational imperatives.

Defense of the Patriarchate and Orthodoxy

In defending the Patriarchate itself, Bartholomew suggested that critics may seek to:

  • discredit or destabilize the institution
  • weaken unity among Orthodox Christians
  • promote a “Russified” model of Orthodoxy that departs from historical tradition

He framed these moves as a broader campaign of manipulation and influence, one he categorically refuses to accept or be intimidated by.

Other Topics Addressed

Bartholomew also spoke about:

  • the future reopening of the historic Theological School of Halki after restoration work, hoping for a summer completion and even inviting the Turkish president to participate in the reopening ceremonies
  • his past diplomatic encounters, including at the White House
  • concern for Christian communities in the Middle East and the importance of preserving their presence in their ancestral homelands.
