Greece emerges as a strategic North-South energy corridor, advancing LNG supply, renewable integration, and regional cooperation with the US and the 3+1 framework.

Stavros Papastavrou, Greece’s Minister of Environment and Energy, presented the 3+1 energy agreements between Greece and the United States over the past months to a US Congressional delegation led by Senator Jerry Moran, highlighting the exceptional level of Greek-American relations. These agreements aim to enhance energy security, diversify supply sources, and boost technological competitiveness in Europe.

The 3+1 Agreements

The deals include:

  • Partnerships between Chevron – HELLENiQ ENERGYExxonMobil – HELLENiQ ENERGY, and Energean.
  • LNG supply via Atlantic See, a joint venture of AKTOR (60%) – DEPA Trading (40%), in collaboration with the US company Venture Global Inc.

US Senators expressed particular interest in the 3+1 framework (Greece, Cyprus, Israel, US). Papastavrou emphasized that the Joint Statement from the 3+1 Energy Ministerial Summit in Greece in November 2025 underscores a commitment to strengthening energy security and cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Greece’s Strategic Energy Role

Papastavrou highlighted Greece’s multi-dimensional role in the new European energy architecture:

  • European LNG gateway
  • North-South backbone via the Vertical Corridor
  • Energy diversification hub, combining LNG, renewables, and grid interconnections
  • Regional gas redistribution center

For the US, this collaboration is of strategic importance, as it expands access to American LNG, reduces Russia’s energy leverage, strengthens transatlantic supply chains, and supports the resilience of Ukraine and the wider region.

US Delegation Participation

From the American side, the delegation included Senators Kirsten Gillibrand, John Barrasso, John Boozman, Deb Fischer, Gary Peters, along with US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Ghilfoil.

These initiatives position Greece as a key energy hub in Europe, combining strategic investments in LNG, renewables, and energy transport infrastructure, while the United States reinforces its commitment to regional stability and security.
