Greek Prime Minister stresses protection of Greek citizens and regional stability as top priorities

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has called for restraint and de-escalation in the Middle East following the latest developments in Iran.

In his Sunday message, he underlined that Greece is closely and carefully monitoring the situation, stressing that the absolute priority is the safety of Greek citizens currently in the region.

“Further escalation must be avoided,” he stated, sending a clear message of calm and responsibility.

Ongoing Diplomatic Contacts

Mr. Mitsotakis held telephone conversations with the Emir of Qatar Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the President of the United Arab Emirates Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides, exchanging views on the rapidly evolving situation.

The issue was also discussed at a meeting of Greece’s national security council, where diplomatic, geopolitical, and security dimensions were assessed.

Focus on Stability and Maritime Security

According to the Prime Minister, Greece remains in close coordination with allies and partners, aiming to:

  • Ensure the protection of Greek nationals
  • Safeguard freedom of navigation
  • Maintain regional stability

Greece seeks to act as a pillar of stability in the wider region, emphasizing diplomacy and respect for International Law.

At a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty, Athens’ message is clear: calm, coordination, and commitment to peace.
