The Hellenic Parliament has approved the procurement of a €3 billion multi-layer air defense and anti-drone system, alongside the upgrade of 38 F-16 fighter jets to the Viper standard at an estimated cost of around €4 billion, as part of the strategic program “Achilles’ Shield.”
According to Defense Minister Nikos Dendias, the program aims to establish a protective shield over Greek territory, capable of countering aircraft, drones, and missiles, with Greek companies contributing at least 25% to the production of the systems. In parallel, the plan includes infrastructure at the Andravida Air Base for the operational integration of F-35 aircraft, which, according to the minister, “are not just planes, but platforms ushering the Hellenic Air Force into a new era.”
The parliamentary debate revealed significant political maneuvering. The New Democracy party fully supported the programs, while PASOK and SYRIZA voted “present” on Achilles’ Shield, rejected the missile systems, and approved other items. The Communist Party (KKE) and MeRA25 opposed all programs, while Greek Solution and NIKI took selective stances depending on the program. The New Left was absent.
The approval also covers the upgrade of four MEKO 200 frigates and maintenance of C-29J military transport aircraft, while the government’s overall strategic plan projects around €28 billion in defense spending through 2036, aiming to strengthen the country against Turkey and align with Western military technological standards.
“Achilles’ Shield” represents a multi-layered defense strategy, combining high-tech capabilities, national industry, and international collaboration, and is expected to serve as a cornerstone in the modernization of the Hellenic Air Force for decades to come.
