European Challenges and the Energy Crisis
The Prime Minister stressed the need for a coordinated European response to rising prices due to the Middle East crisis.
“It is extremely important, not only as a country but also as Europe, to build those barriers so that in a period when our societies are already under stress, they are not further burdened by additional increases, whether we are talking about electricity or fuel.”
He also highlighted that the discussion on “European strategic autonomy” resurfaces whenever major geopolitical developments occur, and it will be a central topic at the upcoming European Council.
“So rest assured, the discussion and the ‘bridge’ between the competitiveness of the European economy and the need to address this short-term energy crisis will dominate the discussions at the next European Council.”
Greece: A Safe Destination for Tourists
The Prime Minister reassured that Greece remains safe for visitors despite its geographical proximity to regions of tension.
“Do not worry. Visit Greece this summer. Greece is a safe country, a member of the European Union. We may be close to the Middle East, but we also have safe distances from the heated zones of the Persian Gulf.”
He emphasized that Greece continues to break tourism records, extending the tourist season and attracting visitors from new markets.
“Greek Australians visiting Greece are not tourists for us; they are returning to their homeland.”
Postal Voting and the Greek Diaspora
Postal voting is considered a major step toward political equality for Greeks abroad.
“The main point is that each citizen can choose whether to vote by mail or go to polling stations set up at local consulates. This is a very significant achievement for the country and, I would say, a leap in political equality for the Greek diaspora.”
Mitsotakis clarified that a dedicated diaspora electoral district will be implemented in future elections, while mandatory representation in the nationwide ballot is already guaranteed.
Greece–Australia Agreement and Investment Opportunities
The interview included the announcement of a practical agreement to avoid double taxation with Australia, resolving a long-standing issue.
“We have practically agreed on the double taxation avoidance treaty, a long-standing matter, with only a small exception for shipping issues, which will be deferred to a later time.”
The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of collaboration with Australia for attracting investments in sectors such as energy and shipping.
“There are significant investment opportunities in Greece, and attracting foreign investment to our homeland is a continuous priority.”
Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ interview highlights the government’s key policy priorities: strengthening security, ensuring economic stability, and promoting diaspora participation, while emphasizing Greece’s international strategy during a period of heightened challenges.
