In response to the ongoing energy crisis, Vassilis Kikilias, Minister of Shipping and Island Policy, highlighted efforts to secure European funds and establish a coordinated EU strategy to stabilize energy prices.
“Efforts are being made to find European funds and implement a common policy to curb energy costs. The Prime Minister and the Finance Minister are in Brussels aiming for a unified European response,” Kikilias said in an interview with OPEN TV.

Kikilias stressed that volatile oil and gas prices affect consumer goods, supermarkets, and ferry tickets, especially in island communities. “In these difficult conditions, the government will do its best, engaging with industry to find solutions depending on the evolution of the situation, to relieve citizens,” he added.
The minister emphasized that measures are being considered gradually, adjusting to the market while protecting islanders and citizens.
Diplomatic and Security Dimension
Kikilias also stressed Greece’s commitment to NATO and the importance of being strong in defense amid ongoing international crises. “If you want peace, you must be strong in defense and ready to respond to all challenges,” he noted.
Regarding Greek seafarers in the Persian Gulf, he confirmed that 11 Greek-flagged ships are currently in the area and that 145–147 Greek or Greek-owned ships operate in the broader region. Communication and safety measures are in place, and no requests for evacuation have been made so far.
