Exclusive analysis of Georgios Kampas’ insights on Greece’s security, deterrence, and regional challenges

Retired Lieutenant General and former Chief of the Hellenic Army General Staff, Georgios Kampas, recently spoke on the Chytou Sofia show about Greece’s strategic position in the Eastern Mediterranean and the surrounding geopolitical challenges.

Regarding the situation in the Middle East, Kampas emphasized that Iran has been militarily defeated, as its air defenses have been destroyed and it cannot threaten U.S. or Israeli operations. Nevertheless, it maintains strategic leverage through control of the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf, influencing the global energy flow.

On the ongoing Iran–Israel conflict, he noted that Iran continues a war of attrition, launching missiles daily, while the United States and Israel are considering ground operations to impose their will. At the same time, according to Kampas, no other major powers are expected to intervene, as Russia and China face limitations and are strategically cautious about engaging in a new war.

Concerning the war in Ukraine, Kampas stated that Russia is strategically gaining time, having captured a significant portion of the country and destroyed infrastructure, while Europe is distracted by other crises. This, he explained, gives Moscow both economic and military breathing room, allowing it to regroup.

Regarding Turkey, Kampas explained that despite its strategic moves, the country has been downgraded in the region due to the actions of Greece and Cyprus in coordination with strategic partners. Even with violations of national airspace, Greece demonstrated determination and defense participation, strengthening its strategic position.

Kampas also emphasized the importance of Greece’s role as a stabilizing pillar: “We strive, and it is in our interest, to be a pillar of stability”, noting the country’s recent defense investments. Modern air defense systems and drones ensure deterrence and strategic adaptation to new conditions. Additionally, 25% of military acquisitions are produced by Greek companies, also supporting the domestic economy.

Finally, Kampas highlighted that the main threats to Greece are terrorist activities potentially orchestrated by Iran via Hezbollah and Hamas, as well as possible strategic moves by Turkey after hostilities end. “We must remain vigilant and not let the gains of this period be lost”, he stressed.

Kampas’ analysis shows that Greece is strategically reinforcing its position in the Eastern Mediterranean, preparing for deterrence, and coordinating international alliances to ensure peace and stability in the region.
